| $2 1/2 Liberty Coins (Quarter Eagle) |
 |
The first quarter eagles were released in 1796. Until the release of the gold dollar in 1849, quarter eagles enjoyed the status of being the smallest denomination federal coin.
The U.S. Mint introduced a new type of Quarter Eagle in 1840 called the Liberty Head. Minted in Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dahlonega, New Orleans and San Francisco. The design, composition, and weight of the Quarter Eagle changed many times throughout its production. Struck from .900-fine gold, this classic coin was replaced with the Indian Head design in 1908.
| $5 Liberty Coins (Half Eagle) |
 |
Authorized in 1792, the $5 Liberty was the first gold coin ever struck for circulation by the U.S. Mint and is also the only coin in U.S. history to be produced at all seven federal mints. Prior to 1838, all Half Eagles were struck at the Philadelphia Mint. Like the Quarter Eagle, the design, composition, and weight of the Half Eagle changed many times throughout its production. Beginning in 1837 and until the Half Eagle was discontinued in 1929, it was struck from .900-fine gold. In 1908 the Liberty design was replaced with the Indian Head design.
